Remembering Stuart Rice
Chair, CARS Board of Governors (1990–1993)
ChemMatCARS Founding Principal Investigator
CARS Executive Director (2001-2003)
Stuart A. Rice (Frank P. Hixon Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago) was a guiding figure in the founding of the University of Chicago Center for Advanced Radiation Sources (CARS). During his tenure in the late 1980’s as Dean of the Physical Sciences Division Stuart recognized that the decision by the DOE to build the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Lab represented an extraordinary opportunity for multi-disciplinary research. Dean Rice promptly took advantage of this new development and worked with Professor J. V. Smith and other science leaders to form CARS. Stuart’s vision and support enabled the University to have a significant footprint at the APS, and over a broad scientific frontier, producing approximately 6,000 publications to date. We are grateful for Stuart’s vision and support in numerous roles over many years. He will be missed.
