Synchrotron X-ray Beamline Scientist at ChemMatCARS, Sector 15 of the Advanced Photon Source / Visiting Research Assistant Professor

The University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking a Beamline Scientist in liquid interface x-ray scattering to join NSF’s ChemMatCARS, a national synchrotron x-ray user research facility at Sector 15 of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). The appointment will be made as a Visiting Research Assistant Professor during its initial phase with long term renewal as a ChemMatCARS employee subject to funding availability and performance.

Description:

Position Summary
Work as a beamline scientist in liquid interface scattering at Sector 15 (NSF’s ChemMatCARS) of the Advanced Photon Source (APS), Argonne National Laboratory. The successful candidate will work within a small group of scientists who specialize in the application of x-ray scattering and spectroscopy to liquid interfaces within a wide range of scientific problems in chemistry, biology, chemical engineering, and materials science. New opportunities for development of scientific facilities in the areas of liquid-solid interface scattering and heterogeneities of liquid interfaces will be available as the result of a major expansion of ChemMatCARS coinciding with an upgrade of the APS.

Duties & Responsibilities

(1) development of new capabilities in liquid interface scattering,

(2) implementation of an ongoing beamline upgrade,

(3) scientific support of users of the facility,

(4) development and maintenance of liquid interface scattering instrumentation, and

(5) collaborative research with ChemMatCARS users and staff.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. in experimental Physical or Biological Sciences (including physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, biology, or related fields). Postdoctoral experience that includes experimental research at synchrotron x-ray facilities is preferable. A successful applicant must satisfy the requirements for access to Argonne National Laboratory.

Preferred Qualifications
Highly desirable skills include: (1) Expertise in synchrotron x-ray techniques for studying liquid-vapor interfaces and the liquid-solid interface (for biological and other applications), x-ray microscopy, coherent x-ray imaging, and x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. (2) Strong computer programming and instrumentation interface skills in Python, C, EPICS, SPEC, and BlueSky programming languages, using Linux-based operating systems. (3) Excellent verbal and written communication skills. (4) Ability to work well both as a team member and independently.
