The lanthanide-surfactant interaction plays an essential role in extraction processes. Nevertheless, what happens at the nanoscale is not fully understood due to the lack of suitable experimental probes. Researchers from Northwestern University and the University of Chicago stuied the structure of the lanthanide-surfactant complex at the air-water interface by using liquid interface scattering techniques and MD simulations. They observed that the interactions take place in phase-transition-like steps as a function of the ion concentration in the aqueous solution.
